Our History
Each Summer from 1971 to 1980, the First United Methodist Church of Apalachicola maintained a preaching mission on St. George Island. Seminarians were called on to preach to the people who would meet under an arbor of palm fronds. In the fall of 1984, Reverend Don McMillan, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Apalachicola began a home Bible Study on the Island. The Bible study began meeting for weekend worship in the congregants’ homes. From the small start of 16 members, St. George Island UMC was officially chartered on May 26th, 1992. In June 2007, SGIUMC formed a cooperative parish with its sister church FUMC of Apalachicola. The church split in 2015 and was given an interim pastor for 6 months of healing. Subequent appointments of experienced pastors have given us stability and a new vision for ministry and mission on the island and the surrounding community.
