In Fall 2016, our UMW started working with the Backpack Buddies program led by the Franklin County Nutrition Association in the Franklin County Schools to collect donations of shelf stable food items to be used in the backpacks sent home with the needy students on the weekends. In a county where 80% of students qualify for reduced or free lunch, these donated food items have been a blessing to needy students in our area.
Please join us in collecting such items as canned soups, canned spaghetti or spaghetti O’s, ravioli, cups of fruit, boxes of raisins, pop tarts, peanut butter crackers, juice drinks, etc. Drop donations off at the church any time during business hours or on Sunday.
In lieu of food items, the UMW accepts donations. Simply make out a check to UMW with “Backpack Buddies” in the memo line.
In addition to food items, our volunteers also donated Christmas “back pack”stockings stuffed with gifts.
***UPDATE***
Thanks to the generosity of our members and guests, the Backpack Buddies program has raised over $1,700 in funds and delivered hundreds of pounds of food for needy children in Franklin County! Keep those donations coming!
