I have flown over the sea and discovered to what extent the perspective of height alters my awareness of the ocean below. Lines that are invisible on the shore can easily be determined from above; elaborate patterns and shapes are clearly defined. I can’t distinguish them as I walk on the shore, but from above there’s a sense and a rhythm hidden from me. Perhaps my own life too is different, seen from God’s perspective. I walk along, worried that there is no shape or purpose, feeling unused, angry or resentful, but God is moving, shaping, and directing me in a pattern that has beauty and meaning. Seen from above, my life will not be random and haphazard, but part of a beautiful design. I pray, Lord, that you will use me in accord with your will and keep me always mindful that I belong in a pattern you have ordained. Amen.
