Today the sun was in my eyes as I walked, even though I pulled the brim of my cap low over my face. I could see a silhouette approach, but was unable to distinguish features in the glare of light. When the person drew up before me, he spoke my name; it was a neighbor I hadn’t seen in a long time! We chatted for a few minutes and make plans to socialize some evening. The encounter made me wonder at the people I fail to recognize as I make my walk through life. The Bible tells us sometimes we entertain “angels unaware”—perhaps sometimes too we fail to entertain them at all, but pass by oblivious of who or what they are. A missed opportunity. And so I pray, dear Lord, help me to see you in each person I meet, never failing to recognize in them the imprint of your Holy Spirit and creative love. Amen.
